What is a return to work program?

Return to Work (RTW) programs are structured initiatives implemented by employers to facilitate the reintegration of injured workers into the workplace.

A return to work (RTW) program is a structured plan that outlines the steps an employer and injured worker will take to facilitate a safe and timely return to work. It typically includes adjustments to duties, hours, or responsibilities to match the worker's current abilities, ensuring the worker can gradually resume their role as they recover.

The program is designed in consultation with medical professionals, insurers, and the injured worker to support recovery while meeting workplace safety requirements and workers compensation obligations.

These programs emphasise the actual act of returning to work and the process of transitioning back to employment during recovery from work-related health issues.

By focusing on individual needs and coordinating efforts among all stakeholders, the RTW program helps minimise the disruption caused by work-related health issues and ensures a timely, safe, and successful RTW process.
