A functional assessment is an evaluation conducted by a qualified healthcare professional to determine an injured worker’s capacity for work.
Also known as a functional capacity evaluation (FCE), work capacity assessment, or functional capacity assessment, a functional assessment is an evaluation used to measure an injured worker's physical or cognitive abilities in relation to their job tasks.
What is the purpose of a functional assessment?
A functional assessment is performed by a healthcare professional to determine whether the injured worker can safely perform their duties. It also helps identify any modifications or support they may need during their recovery.
What does a functional assessment test for?
The assessment may include testing strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination, or assessing mental tasks such as problem-solving and memory, depending on the worker's role and injury.
At what point do I undergo a functional assessment?
A functional assessment comes after an initial assessment as it is a more detailed evaluation of your condition. It usually takes place after the injured worker has been issued a certificate of capacity (COC) by their nominated treating doctor (NTD).
Functional assessments can occur at subsequent stages of the workplace rehab process again if, once again, anyone finds it necessary. These later assessments would mainly be to review your recovery progress.
Why have I been scheduled for a functional assessment?
Not every injured worker undergoes a functional assessment.
If you find yourself being scheduled for one, it's because one of the parties involved in your claim has requested for it.
Who can request for a functional assessment?
The request can be made by any party involved in the claim but it is most commonly done by the rehab consultant or insurer.
How does a functional assessment contribute to the work rehab process?
In addition to the evaluation made in the COC, a functional assessment would:
- Provide insight into the worker's condition from the rehab consultant’s perspective;
- Capture an accurate and holistic snapshot of the worker's condition; and
- Ensure alignment amongst all stakeholders.
This ensures the recommendations made are relevant for the injured worker's work rehab process.
